A Message from Commander Don Frias
As we welcome October, the 2026–2027 VFW year continues with exciting opportunities, important programs, and activities that bring our members, families, and community together. We have already accomplished a great deal, but much work remains as we continue strengthening VFW Post 401 and fulfilling our mission to serve veterans and their families.
The success of our Post does not happen because of one individual. It happens because of the dedication, teamwork, and commitment of our members, Auxiliary, volunteers, and supporters. Each event, fundraiser, meeting, and act of service contributes to the continued success of Post 401.
October is an important month for two of the VFW’s premier youth scholarship programs, Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen.
The 2026–2027 theme for both programs is "What a Veteran Taught Me About America.”
Voice of Democracy is open to eligible students in grades 9–12 through an audio-essay competition, while Patriot’s Pen is open to eligible students in grades 6–8 through a written essay competition.
I encourage every member to help spread the word about these opportunities. Reach out to local schools, teachers, counselors, students, parents, and grandparents. These programs provide our youth with an opportunity to learn about patriotism, citizenship, and the sacrifices made by those who have served our country.
Our youth are the future, and investing in their education and understanding of patriotism is one of the most meaningful ways we can support the next generation.
Throughout October, we have several fundraising efforts taking place to support Post, Department, and National VFW programs. These fundraisers are more than opportunities to raise money; they are an important part of how we continue supporting veterans, military families, youth programs, and our community.
One of our major fundraising priorities is our Post 401 Patio Fundraiser. This is a significant project for our Post, and we are working toward raising the funds needed to improve our patio area and create an even better gathering space for our members, families, and guests.
Our Post Home is a place where veterans come together, friendships are built, stories are shared, and camaraderie continues long after military service. Improvements to our patio will help us provide a more enjoyable and welcoming environment for everyone.
I encourage our members to participate in our fundraising activities, purchase tickets, attend events, make donations when possible, and help spread the word. Every contribution, large or small, brings us closer to reaching our goals.
KARAOKE-EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT (6-10 pm) & 1ST AND 3RD SUNDAYS (5–9 pm)
Join us for karaoke every Wednesday evening and on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month! Whether you enjoy singing, listening to great music, or spending time with friends, everyone is welcome to join the fun. Our dedicated VFW Auxiliary 401 members prepare and serve delicious home-cooked meals with a variety of wonderful menus during our karaoke events. Their hard work and commitment make these evenings even more special, and we sincerely appreciate their continued dedication and support.
POOL TOURNAMENTS— EVERY THURSDAY NIGHT
Join us Thursday evenings for friendly competition, laughter, and fellowship around the pool tables.
We are looking forward to our Halloween Adult Gathering on Friday, October 30, 2026! Join us for an evening of fellowship, laughter, great food, and camaraderie at our Post Home.
We will be having a potluck dinner, with the post providing the main dish, and we encourage everyone attending to bring a favorite side dish to share. Potluck sign-up sheets will be available at the Post.
We are excited to announce that the VFW Auxiliary National President will be making her official visit in November, and we will host a dinner for her during her visit. I encourage our members to help make this visit a memorable one and to show the pride we have in our Post and the work we accomplish together. Additional information regarding the visit will be shared as plans are finalized.
CRAFT FAIR/CAR SHOW-November 14, 2026, 10-3 pm
The auxiliary will be hosting a Craft Fair and Car Show in conjunction with Sangre Unida. Come out and support the auxiliary and get your Christmas gifts. Food available for purchase.
As we continue through the VFW year, membership remains one of our most important priorities. Every eligible veteran we welcome into our organization strengthens our ability to advocate for veterans, support our programs, and preserve the legacy of the VFW.
Recruitment is important, but so is retention. We must continue creating an atmosphere where members feel appreciated, respected, included, and encouraged to participate. Invite an eligible veteran to visit our Post. Encourage a member who has not attended recently to return. Welcome new faces, share information about upcoming activities, and help make Post 401 a place where veterans want to belong.
As your Commander, I want to personally thank every member, officer, Auxiliary member, volunteer, and supporter for your continued commitment to VFW Post 401. Whether you are organizing a fundraiser, preparing a meal, volunteering your time, attending a meeting, participating in an event, recruiting a new member, or simply checking on a fellow veteran, your contributions matter.
I am proud of the work we are doing, grateful for the people who make it possible, and excited about what we can accomplish in the months ahead. Thank you for your continued dedication, loyalty, commitment, and support of VFW Post 401. Let us make October another successful month filled with service, camaraderie, fellowship, teamwork, and pride in our Post.
