A satirical reflection by Author/Artist Phil Fehrenbacher
Phil enlisted in the Army in 1965 where he served for years in Vietnam. He became a graphic designer and has worked for the state of Oregon for 26 years. He retired in 2003 and started the Cartoon "In-Country". The cartoons reflect his experiences during his tour of duty in South Vietnam.

As we move into August, our new VFW year is officially underway. The excitement of a new year brings with it new opportunities to serve, grow, and strengthen our Post and the communities we proudly support.
July allowed us to begin a new chapter, but August is when we start putting our plans into action. This is the time to come together, get involved, and build the momentum that will carry us throughout the year.
The strength of VFW Post 401 comes from its members, volunteers, families, and supporters. Each of you brings something valuable to our organization. Whether you volunteer at an event, attend a meeting, support a fellow veteran, participate in a community project, or simply welcome a new member, your involvement makes a difference.
As your Commander, I encourage everyone to look for ways to become involved this year. Bring a friend to a meeting, volunteer for a project, support our programs, and most importantly, look out for one another. Together, we can continue the proud tradition of Post 401 while finding new ways to serve our veterans, their families, and our community.
Our mission is more than a title or a position—it is a commitment. We owe it to those who served before us, to those serving today, and to the generations who will follow to keep the spirit of service alive.
I am honored to serve as your Commander for the 2026–2027 year, and I look forward to working alongside each of you. I know that with the dedication and teamwork of our members, we can accomplish great things together.
